March 14, 2006
The Game Story:
AMHERST, Mass. - For the third year in a row, Albany has upset UMass by one goal as the Great Danes stunned the No. 7 Minutemen, 9-8, on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field. Albany's Jordan Levine scored the tying goal with 2:41 left in regulation and tallied the game-winner with 18 seconds left to lift the Great Danes.

The loss ended UMass' 13-game home win streak, which dated to March 16, 2004, when Albany handed the Minutemen an 11-10 loss. Albany was the only team to have beaten UMass in each of the last two seasons.

Levine scored his third and fourth goals of the game on similar plays as high picks were set allowing him to beat UMass goalie Doc Schneider (Massapequa, N.Y.). Schneider was sensational early in the game, keeping the Minutemen alive, making eight of his 14 saves in the first quarter as Albany outshot UMass, 15-3.

Albany goalie Brett Queener came up big with four saves in the fourth quarter including a point-blank stop of UMass' Clay Stabert (Wynnewood, Pa.) as the clock expired giving Albany the win.

All-American Sean Morris (Marshfield, Mass.) continued to rack up points as he had two goals and four assists for a game-best six points. He has 26 points in just four games to lead the nation with 6.5 points per game. But his effort was not enough as Albany rallied back after the Minutemen had surged ahead.

After Albany had taken a 7-5 lead with 12:52 left in regulation, the Minutemen went on a 3-0 run to take an 8-7 lead with 10:36 left in the game.

Senior Bret Caretsky (Northport, N.Y.) scored a beautiful behind-the-back goal off a feed from Morris with 12:10 left in the fourth to make it 7-06 Albany. Junior Andrew Recchione (Mahwah, N.J.) tallied his second goal of the game on a man-up off a pass from Pat Larmon (Chesterfield, Mo.) to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:39 left.

Just over a minute later sophomore Rory Pedrick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored his second of the game on a feed from Morris to give the Minutemen the 8-7 lead with 10:36 left

The teams went scoreless for the eight minutes before Levine's heroics.

Albany dominated the first quarter but the game stood tied at 1-1 after the first quarter on goals by UMass' Fred Federico (Madison, Conn.) and Albany's Chris Martocchia. Morris scored twice in the second quarter and assisted a goal by Recchione as the Minutemen took a 5-3 halftime lead.

UMass dominated the face-off "X" again as senior Jake Deane (Annapolis, Md.) won 15-of-20 draw he took and had a game-high 10 groundballs.

UMass looks to get back in the win column on Saturday as they travel to New England rival Brown for a 1 p.m. face-off.
