| The Game Story: | |||||
| AMHERST, Mass. - Jeff Zywicki (Napean, Ontario) scored a career-high nine points on seven goals and
two assists, and the UMass defense held its fifth straight opponent under 10 goals as the Minutemen breezed
to a 15-5 victory over Albany on Tuesday at Garber Field. The win moves UMass' record to 5-0 overall.
The Minutemen started off slow, but led virtually the entire game. Zywicki tallied his first goal just under three minutes in to give UMass a 1-0 lead. Albany tied the game at the 10:39 mark on Luke Daquino's netter, but the Minutemen got goals by Ryan Connolly (North Andover, Mass.), Kevin Glenz (Merrick, N.Y.) and Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) to take a 4-1 lead. The Great Danes scored a late marker by Chris Martocchia to trim the margin to 4-2 after one period. The two teams played 14 minutes of scoreless lacrosse in the second quarter, before UMass' high-paced offense struck late in the frame. Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Zywicki netted goals with 34 seconds apart to give UMass a 6-2 lead heading into the halftime break. The Minutemen then dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Great Danes, 5-1, and allowing only an EMO goal. Connolly and Tundo netted goals a minute apart early in the stanza, and Zywicki tallied the last three scores of the period to bump the UMass lead to 11-3 after 45 minutes. UMass completed a 6-0 run, spanning the third and fourth quarters, with a netter by Glenz at the 13:30 mark and Zywicki's sixth and seventh goals of the game at the 11:22 and 10:22 mark for a 14-3 cushion. Albany scored two late goals to cut the UMass advantage to 14-5, but senior defenseman Andy Kerr (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored his first career goal with 2:32 remaining to end the scoring. Zywicki's seven goals were a career high as were his nine points. In the past two games, Zywicki has scored 15 points (9 g, 6 a). Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) dished out a career-high six assists, the most for a Minuteman player since April 27, 1994, when Mike Valente distributed eight in a 20-7 victory over Boston College. The Minutemen outshot the Great Danes, 46-29, and won 15-of-23 face-offs. Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded eight saves in the cage for UMass. UMass remains at home with a March 21 contest against Hartford. Face-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Garber Field. |
