|The Game Story:|
|Amherst, Mass. - Junior midfielder Daniel Mellynchuk's (West Sayville, NY) second goal of the game with 2:31 remaining in overtime rallied the Brown men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over fifth-ranked UMass at Garber Field, sending the Minutemen to their first loss of the season.|
The win evens Brown's record at 1-1 overall on the young season, while UMass falls to 3-1.
Trailing 8-5 midway through the fourth quarter, Brown rallied with three straight goals by freshman Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD), including the game-tying goal on an assist by senior George Sherman (Greenwich, CT) with 3:22 left in regulation.
In overtime, Bears' senior defenseman senior Sam Ford (Reisterstown, MD) picked up a ground ball and made a pass to Mellynchuk, who scored the game-winning goal.
Bellistri scored his first three collegiate goals and added an assist to lead the Bears. Mellynchuk also scored his first two goals of the season, scoring on just two shots. Junior Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO) finished with a goal and two assists, while freshman Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) had a goal and an assist.
Brown's defense made the difference in the game, with freshman goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) making his first career starting role in the Brown goal. He finished with eight saves.
Unbelievably, Brown was able to beat the Minutemen despite winning just 3-of-20 face-offs.
Grant Whiteway led the Minutemen with three goals. Joe Calvello was nearly unstoppable in the face-off x, winning 17-of-20 face-offs for UMass.
Brown senior John DePeters (Woodbury, CT) got the Bears on the scoreboard first, scoring at the 7:07 mark to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. Unanswered goals by Matt Whippen and Grant Whiteway gave the Minutemen a 2-1 lead after one quarter.
Hurster tied the game with 1:49 left in the opening half, and Mellynchuk, on an assist by Hurster, gave Brown the lead at the half, 3-2, scoring with six seconds remaining.
UMass tied the game, 3-3, early in the third quarter, but Blynn scored with 6:29 left in the quarter to put Brown up, 4-3.
The Minutemen seemingly took control with three straight goals at the end of the quarter to grab a 6-4 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Senior Alex Jones ( Annapolis, MD) netted his first goal of the season to pull the Bears to within one goal, 6-5, with 12:36 left in the game. UMass answered with goals by Sean Cleary and Whiteway to take an 8-5 advantage with 7:11 left to play.
The Bears are back in action again on Wednesday, March 6, traveling to Hartford, Conn. to face the Hartford Hawks. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
