Massachusetts dominated play in the first half, but could only get one shot past Vermont freshman goaltender Michael Gabel. Junior Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) scored the lone Minuteman goal with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter. Massachusetts outshot Vermont 30-7 in the opening half.

Vermont tied the game, 1-1, at the 12:06 mark of the third quarter when Mark Prior beat senior netminder Rob Schneider (Huntington Station, N.Y.). The Minutemen regained the lead less than two minutes later when Morley scored off a feed from freshman Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Massachusetts went on to score five unanswered goals to close out the quarter with a 7-1 lead. Paccione scored three of them, while Morley and sophomore Kevin Glenz (Merrick, N.Y.) rounded out the third quarter scoring with his first career goal.

Prior scored an extra-man goal at the 7:11 mark of the fourth quarter bringing the Catamounts within five, but the Minutemen scored three more times to end any come-back hope. Paccione tied a career-high with his fourth goal of the game, while sophomore Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and junior Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) completed the Massachusetts scoring for the day. Tundo picked up two assists on the afternoon.

Schneider made six saves in the cage for the Minutemen, while Gabel recorded 21 saves for Vermont.

The Minutemen, who outshot the Catamounts 51-18, also committed six penalties for 6:30. The Catamounts converted on two of their six extra-man opportunities. Massachusetts was 0-3 with the extra-man.

Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, March 16, in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game with New England rival Brown at Richard F. Garber Field.
