|EMMITSBURG, Md. – Canisius scored six-straight goals to defeat Mount St. Mary’s 11-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.|
Dan Mohr (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) posted a career-high in points after registering three goals and two assists for the Mount (0-5, 0-1 MAAC) while Jon Rodrick (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane Regional) found the twine twice in the loss.
Nick LoCoco led the Golden Griffins (1-3, 1-0 MAAC) with two tallies and two assists, and Michael Blacho and Michael Benzinger each had three goals in the winning effort.
With Mount St. Mary’s holding a 3-2 advantage, Canisius rolled off the next six goals and never looked back to earn its second-straight win against the Mountaineers.
Blocho tied the game at 3 on an unassisted tally with 3:52 left in the second quarter before Benzinger handed the Golden Griffins the lead it would not relinquish with his goal at 2:34 on the clock in the second quarter, 4-3.
Canisius then came out of halftime to score the first four goals of the third stanza to take an 8-3 lead. After Tim Rowley set up Blocho at 13:42, Benzinger found the back of the net unassisted at 11:44. LoCoco then capped the surge by feeding Chad Buck at 10:36 and Blocho 32 seconds later for the five-marker margin.
Mohr helped halt the Golden Griffins run when he found Mark Stapor (Herndon, Va./Bishop O’Connell) with 7:21 left in the third quarter. Adam Jones answered for Canisius to end the scoring in the third at 5:20.
Mohr scored unassisted to start the fourth quarter at 13:33 and 10:32 to trim the deficit to 10-6.
The Golden Griffins responded with two goals by LoCoco and Tom Hensel to reclaim a five-tally lead with 2:01 remaining.
Brendan Harrison (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) scored on a rebound shot with 33 seconds remaining.
LoCoco handed Canisius an early 1-0 edge when he found the twine at 13:40 in the first quarter.
Mount St. Mary’s grabbed a 2-1 margin after scoring the next two goals. Rodrick took a feed from Jim O’Shea (Rockville Center, N.Y.//Chaminade) at 6:20 for his first collegiate goal and Joe Derwent (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) set up Mohr at 3:19 to hand the Mount a one-goal advantage after the end of the first quarter.
The two teams then traded markers with Benzinger scoring off a Drew Caldiero helper at 12:08 and Rodrick finding the twine off a Mohr assist at 6:52 in the second quarter. The Golden Griffins then scored the next six goals to take control of the match.
T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 13 saves for the Mountaineers and Chris Courteau turned away nine shots for Canisius.
Mount St. Mary’s and the Golden Griffins opened the MAAC schedule for the third time while the Mount has lost its first league game for the eight-straight season.
Mount St. Mary’s returns to action on Saturday at Wagner. Game time is 3 p.m.
