Mount Saint Mary's vs. Canisius

The Game Story:
Emmitsburg, Md. - The Mount St. Mary's (5-9/5-1) men's lacrosse team clinched a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament with a 12-4 win over Canisius (4-7/2-4) on a cold and wet day at Alumni Field in Emmitsburg, Md. Junior Kevin Merlini (Wyncote, Pa./La Salle) scored the hat trick to lead the Mount to victory in the season's final game at home for the Mount.

Seven Mountaineers scored included two from sophomore Jay Duffy (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), junior Josh Warfield (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) and senior Matt Radebaugh (Parkton, Md./Calvert Hall). Chris Tocin scored twice for Canisius in the losing effort.

The Mount scored first on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Mark Cox (Parkton, Md./Hereford) a minute and a half into the contest. Greg Campbell answered for the Griffins with a goal at 11:11 of the first quarter. Duffy and Merlini would score unassisted goals to give the Mount a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Canisius would start the second quarter a man down for three minutes when Campbell's stick was found to be illegal and the Mount took advantage with a pair of extra man goals from Merlini and Warfield. Tocin would score both of his goals in the second quarter to keep the Griffins within striking distance as the half ended with the Mount up 5-3.

The Mount scored seven consecutive goals to begin the second half to put the game away for the Mountaineers. Rick Neward scored the final goal of the game for Canisius with 1:13 left in the game. Freshman Billy Jautze (Setawket, N.Y./Ward Melville) posted a pair of assists as did senior Mark Cox (Parkton, Md./Hereford).

The Mount dominated the face off circle winning 15 of 17. Junior Steve Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) won 15 faceoffs losing just one in his best performance in the circle to date. He also scored an unassisted goal just 56 seconds into the second half to get the Mount started. The Mountaineers also controlled the ground game winning 48 ground balls to Canisius' 16.

Mount senior keeper Tom Dryer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) posted 11 saves on the day and was relieved by junior goalie Dave Lambour (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) in the fourth quarter who also posted a pair of saves. Seth Vath started in the crease for Canisius allowing 10 goals and grabbing 13 saves on the afternoon.

The Mount regular season ends next Saturday in Rhode Island when the Mountaineers face the Providence Friars. With five wins in the MAAC, the Mount has clinched one of four spots in the MAAC Tournament which begins May 4 at Marist. Game time at Providence is 1 p.m.
