| Emmitsburg, Md. (February 26, 2008)--Mount St. Mary's fell to No. 4 Maryland, 17-7, in the men's lacrosse season opener at Waldron Family Stadium on campus on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Dan Mohr (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Arena) had two goals and two assists in his first collegiate game while senior Joe Derwent (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) posted a career high four points (1g, 3a) for the Mount. Maryland wasted little time taking control of the game, posting four goals in the opening 2:35 of the game. Grant Catalino opened the scoring with an extra-man goal 1:36 into the contests. Will Dalton followed with a goal just eight seconds later to make the score 2-0. Ryan Young and Catalino added goals 24 seconds apart to give the Terrapins (2-0) a 4-0 advantage. Maryland stretched the lead to six on a pair of Travis Reed goals before the Mount got on the scoreboard. Junior Geery Grant (Blue Point, N.Y./Chaminade) scored the first of his two goals of the day to put the Mount on the scoreboard. Freshman Brendan Harriston (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) converted a Derwent feed with 1:32 left in the opening quarter for his first collegiate goal to cut the deficit to 6-2 after one quarter. Reed opened the second quarter with a pair of man-up goals in the opening 39 seconds to give the Terrapins an 8-2 lead. Adam Sear and Dan Groot made the score 10-2 before Jim O'Shea beat Maryland goalkeeper Brian Phipps with 2:39 left in the opening half to cut the margin to 10-3. The Terrapins outscored the Mount 5-1 in the third quarter to grab a 15-4 advantage. Sear, Jeff Reynolds, Young, Catalino and Groot all scored for Maryland in the third. Mohr tallied his first collegiate goal at the 7:50 mark of the third quarter for the Mount. The Mount converted an extra-man opportunity 2:38 into the final quarter when Derwent buried a shot on a pass from Mohr. Maryland's Brett Weiss countered with his first goal of the game, but Mohr's second tally of the game made the score 16-6 with 2:31 left. Scott Tompkins scored for Maryland with 1:56 left in the game, and Grant converted a Mohr feed just before the final buzzer to round out the scoring. Freshman goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 18 saves in his first collegiate game for the Mount. Phipps played the first half for Maryland, making one save to earn the victory. The Terrapins held a 46-18 advantage in shots and held a 36-18 edge in ground balls in the contest. Freshman Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) was 5-for-8 on face-offs while picking up a team-high four ground balls for the Mount. The Mount returns to action on Friday, Feb. 29, with a 7:00 p.m. game at No. 11 Navy.
