|The Game Story:|
|Emmitsburg, Md. - The Mount St. Mary's (3-9/3-1) men's
lacrosse team went into halftime trailing 14th ranked Navy
(6-3/3-2) by one, 6-5, only to be shutout in the second half to
fall to the Midshipmen, 10-5 in the last nonconference game of
the season on a beautiful afternoon in the mountains of
The nationally ranked Midshipmen opened the game with two quick goals in the first two minutes and 12 seconds and looked to be off to a big win. The Mount regrouped and cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal from Josh Warfield (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) who picked up a rebound at the crease and jammed it home. A little over a minute later senior Pat Whitty (Potomac, Md./St. John's) took a feed from junior Kevin Merlini (Wyncote, Pa./La Salle) and deposited the ball in the upper left corner to tie the game at two.
Unfortunately for the Mount, Navy had an answer and it was prompt. Six seconds after Whitty tied the game, Eddie McKinnon scored his second goal of the game to give Navy the lead back for good. Joe Bossi followed with his second goal of the contest and Scott Gaiser wrapped up the quarter with an extra-man goal at the 1:46 mark.
Undaunted, the Mount battled back again. Warfield scored his second goal of the game off a feed from Merlini and freshman Billy Jautze (Setawket, N.Y./Ward Melville) made it a one goal game at the 8:35 mark. Exactly a minute later Jeff Fellows put Navy back up by two but Merlini had an answer for that one scoring off a feed from sophomore Jay Duffy (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll). The half would end with the Mount trailing by one, 6-5.
That would be as close as the Mount would get as Navy shutdown the Mount offense in the second half allowing the Mountaineers no goals on only five shots. Navy out shot the Mount, 33-16 for the game and dominated the ground game winning 52 ground balls to the Mount's 34. Navy beat the Mount on the ground in the second half, 30-9.
Mount senior keeper Tom Dryer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) registered 13 saves and Navy's Jon Higdon had six. McKinnon had the big game for the Midshipmen with a hat trick and a pair of assists. Joe Bossi and Scott Gaiser both had a pair of goals and Graham Gill had a pair of assists in the win. Merlini had a goal and two assists and Warfield scored twice for the Mount cause.
The Mount wraps up the season with three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games beginning with this Saturday's match against Siena at Alumni Field. Game time is noon. Canisius comes to town on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tilt. The Mount finishes the regular season with a trip to Providence on April 27 to face the Friars. The MAAC Tournament begins May 4 at Marist. The top four teams in the conference advance to the tournament.
