|April 26, 2003-- Emmitsburg, Md. -The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse
team clinched the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season
title with a 17-12 win over VMI at the Mount's Alumni Field on Saturday
afternoon. The Mount improved to 8-7 overall and 7-1 in the MAAC to
earn the top seed in the MAAC Tournament which will be held May 2 and 4
at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. VMI finishes the season 4-8
overall and 4-4 in the MAAC. The Mount finished the regular season with
wins in seven of its final eight games.
The Mount jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Billy Jautze (Setawket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Ian Cassidy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park). The Keydets fought back on two Leo McInerney goals to tie the game at 2-2, but the Mount answered with goals from Cassidy and Josh Warfield (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) to end the first quarter with a 4-2 lead.
The Mount was called for an illegal stick to open the second quarter, giving VMI a man-up opportunity for three minutes, but it was the Mount who took advantage, scoring two man-down goals to take a 6-2 lead. Jautze scored the first man-down goal unassisted and then Matt Warner(Corning, N.Y./Corning East) converted a feed from Jautze to give the Mount a 6-2 lead. Warfield then added his second of the day to give the Mount a 7-2 lead. The teams continued to pile up the goals, and the Mount went to the half with a 10-6 lead.
The Mountaineers took control of the game in the third scoring seven unanswered goals to take a commanding 17-6 lead. Cassidy, Daniel Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East), Pat Beall (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg), Jautze, Warner, Jason Werner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) and Brandon Adams (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) all scored for the Mount in the quarter.
VMI finished the game strong, scoring all six goals in the final quarter. Matt Dixson had two scored during the streak while Erik Rohrmann added three assists.
Jautze finished with a game-high five points for the Mount on three goals and two assists. Warfield added three goals and an assist while Cassidy had three goals. Warner added two goals and an assist and Kevin Merlini (Wyncote, Pa./LaSalle) had a goal and two assists. VMI was paced by Leo McInerney who had three goals and three assists. Will Collier also had three goals for the Keydets while Rohrmann added four assists in the game.
Mount goalkeeper Dave Lambour (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) made five saves in the win while VMI goalkeeper Brian Ward had 17 saves. Mount midfielder Steve Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) won 20 of 24 face-offs and had a team-high 15 ground balls.
The Mount will face Canisius in the opening round of the MAAC Tournament on Friday, May 2, at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Providence will face St. Joseph's in the other game, with the winner of the MAAC earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Touranment.
