|April 12, 2003-- Emmitsburg, Md. -The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse
team won its fifth-straight game, 12-4, over Wagner on Wednesday
afternoon at the Mount's Alumni Field. With the win, the Mount improves
to 6-6 on the year and 5-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and
moves into a first-place tie with St. Joseph's for the conference lead.
Matt Warner (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and Kevin Merlini (Wyncote,
Pa./LaSalle) each had two goals and two assists to pace the Mount
offense. Daniel Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) also had two goals
in the win while Stephen Kelly (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Josh
Warfield (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston), Billy Jautze (Setawket, N.Y./Ward
Melville), Jay Duffy (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), Matt Cougle
(Baltimore, Md./Eastern) and Ian Cassidy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park)
tallied goals. Wagner was paced by Kevin Zulauf, who had two goals in
the game. Also scoring for Wagner were Sean Hennessey and Michael
The Mount dominated play in the first half, holding a 31-5 advantage in
shots on goal and an 8-0 lead on the scoreboard. Jautze started the
scoring with a man-up goal with 9:16 left in the first quarter.
Warfield and Hatton also connected in the quarter as the Mount led 3-0
after one period of play. The Mount scored four goals in a span of four
minutes in the second quarter to take control of the game. Wagner
goalkeeper Chris Sochacki kept his team in the game, making 14 of his 20
saves in the first half.
Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper David Lambour (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton)
made two saves in earning the win while Dan Whitehurst (Woodstock,
Md./Centennial) made six saves off the bench.
The Mount win sets up a showdown with St. Joseph's for first place in
the MAAC on Saturday, April 19, at the Mount's Alumni Field at 2:00 p.m
