North Carolina vs. Notre Dame

The Game Story:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.­­ No. 11 Notre Dame went on a four-goal run to begin the second half and never looked back as it defeated No. 12 North Carolina 10-8 Saturday in menšs lacrosse at Fetzer Field. Notre Dame remained undefeated at 3-0 while UNC lost its second straight and is now 1-2. Matt Howell was the offensive spark for Notre Dame as he had four goals and one assist in the game. The other six Fighting Irish goals came from six different players. Freshman Ryan Blair had a goal and two assists for UNC and Austin Garrison two goals to lead the Tar Heels.

Carolina led 2-0 midway through the first quarter before the Fighting Irish ran off seven of the next eight goals to lead 7-3 with 8:21 left in the third quarter. Howell had two of his goals in the third quarter and another two in the fourth quarter as the Fighting Irish held off the UNC rally near the end of the game. With Garrison getting a pair of goals, UNC cut the lead to 9-8 with 4:04 left as Kyle Bell pulled UNC within one at that point. The Tar Heels had two more possessions but could not score and a Notre Dame goal with four seconds left provided the final margin.

Stewart Crosland made 14 saves for the Irish as Notre Dame withstood a UNC advantage in shot of 43-32. Paul Spellman made six saves for Carolina.

The Tar Heels now face four games in the next 14 days that will determine the fate of their season. UNC plays at Ohio State Wednesday, at home against Denver next Saturday, at home against No. 10 Duke March 19 and at No. 3 Maryland March 22.
