The Game Story:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 17 Ohio State men's lacrosse team (0-2, 0-0
GWLL) lost to No. 7 Navy (2-0, 0-0 Patriot League), 11-5, Saturday at
North Turf Field in the Buckeyes' home opener. Six Buckeyes had a
point in the game, including freshman Kevin Buchanan's first career
goal.

Navy scored the only three goals of the first quarter. Billy Looney
got the Mids on the board at 9:44, followed by a Jon Birsner tally at
6:55. Ben Horn closed out the scoring with a goal with 39 seconds
remaining.

The Buckeyes were outscored in the second quarter, 5-3. Buckeye
midfielder Chris Brown (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) scored his
first goal of the season 1:20 into the quarter, but Navy responded
with two goals in less than two minutes. Nick Mirabito scored at
12:31, followed by Birsner's second goal of the game at 12:15. .
Tommy Wallin then scored back-to-back goals in 45 seconds (at 9:56
and 9:11) to push the Mids' lead to 7-1. Buchanan (Cockeysville,
Md./Calvert Hall) recorded his first career goal with 5:40 left in
the half. Navy's Dwayne Osgood tallied with 1:49 remaining before
Buckeye Justin Doran (Jr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills
East)ended the scoring in the half with a goal with 27 seconds left
on the clock. Navy held an 8-3 advantage on the scoreboard heading
into halftime.

In the third quarter, Navy scored the only two goals. Nick Mirabito
tallied just 10 seconds in, scooping up a groundball and running in
alone on the Buckeye net. Graham Gill made the score 10-3 with a
score with 5:06 on the clock.

The Buckeyes scored the next two goals to open the fourth quarter.
Ben Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) stripped the ball
from the Navy goalie and scooped up the groundball, putting the ball
in the basically open net at 13:28 for his second goal of the season.
Then with Navy a man down, Ohio State's Gary Bining (Jr., Delta,
British Columbia/Delta Secondary) took a pass from Jason Bloom
(r-Jr., Coquitlam, British Columbia) and scored with 8:09 remaining.
Walling completed his hat trick and the scoring with 5:51 remaining
for the 11-5 final. The Buckeyes stopped five Navy extra-man chances
in the quarter, including a full minute when OSU was three men down.

The Buckeyes were outshot in the game, 36-22. In net for Ohio State,
freshman Bill Curry (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) started the game and
played 30 minutes, allowing eight goals and making seven saves. Mike
Rimmer (r-Fr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) came in at the
start of the second half and closed out the game, making four saves
and giving up three goals. Navy's Matt Russell had nine saves in all
60 minutes in net.

OSU converted its only man-up chance in the game and held Navy
scoreless on five chances. Ohio State had 32 groundballs and Navy
scooped up 28.

For the Mids, Birsner had a team-best four points on two goals and
two assists, while Wallin had a game-high three goals.

The Buckeyes will return to action at 1 p.m. March 5 when the face
off against UMBC in Baltimore, Md., on the Johns Hopkins campus. The
game will be televised live by WMAR TV (Channel 2) in Baltimore and
will be shown on tape delay by ESPN at 1 p.m. March 6.
