The Game Story:
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's lacrosse team lost to Penn State in overtime, 14-13, Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the Buckeyes' home opener.

The Buckeyes (0-4, 0-0 Great Western Lacrosse League) led, 12-9, early in the fourth quarter before the Nittany Lions (2-2, 0-0 ECAC) battled back to tie the score at 12-all. Just 40 seconds after PSU knotted the score with six minutes left in regulation, Buckeye junior Jason Lutz (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) regained the OSU lead (13-12) with a goal with 5:20 left on the clock. The Buckeyes maintained the one-goal edge until Penn State's Brian Boyle tied the game at 13 with 1:55 remaining. In overtime, Penn State won the opening faceoff and Pat Heim scored the gamewinner just 22 seconds into the extra period, marking his game-high fifth goal of the contest.

The teams ended the first quarter tied at 4. Penn State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals at 14:20 by Heim and 12:05 from Bubba Scott. The Buckeyes responded with a four-goal run. Senior Craig Nolan (Plano, Texas/Jesuit College Prep), assisted by freshman Joel Dalgarno (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Western Reserve (Ohio), got OSU on the board at 9:09, followed by Peter Schell's (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) goal that tied the game at 2 at 7:08. Nolan, assisted by Andrew Bender (Sr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), put the Buckeyes ahead for the first time with a goal with six minutes remaining in the quarter. Kevin Buchanan (So., Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall) closed out the run with a goal at 3:21. Penn State then scored twice in the last 1:20 to knot the score at 4. Greg Gurenlian tallied a man-up goal at 1:20 before Boyle scored with just nine seconds left in the quarter.


The second quarter began with one of the Penn State players assessed a 3-minute penalty for illegal equipment. The Buckeyes converted twice with the man advantage, with Justin Doran's (Sr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) goal at 14:05 and Dalgarno's tally at 12:20. Bender assisted on both man-up scores. The teams traded goals through the end of the quarter, as the Buckeyes went into halftime ahead, 8-7. Penn State got goals from Andrew Mackrides at 11:46, Gurenlian at 7:47 and Heim at 2:18. Josh Wittenberg (Sr., Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored for the Buckeyes at 8:43 and set up Dalgarno's goal at 2:29.

The Nittany Lions opened the third quarter with John Eremus's man-up goal 49 seconds in to tie the game at 8. After Nolan and Heim traded goals at 10:29 and 9:58, respectively, the Buckeyes closed out the quarter with goals by Buchanan and Bender to lead, 11-9, going into the fourth quarter.

Jon DeCanio (Jr., Clifton, Va./Robinson) scored 49 seconds into the fourth to extend the Buckeye lead to three (12-9). Penn State then went on a three-goal run, with Matt Radecic (9:56), Eremus (6:34) and Heim (6:00) tallying, to knot the score at 12. Lutz stopped the run with his goal at 5:20, putting OSU back in the lead (13-12). Boyle's goal at 1:55 tied the game at 13 and Heim scored just 22 seconds into overtime to lift Penn State to the win.

Nolan led the Buckeyes with three goals, while Buchanan had a team-best three assists and four points. Wittenberg chipped in three points on a goal and two assists, while Dalgarno had two goals and a helper.

Sophomore Bill Curry (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) started the game for the Buckeyes, making 10 saves in 60:22 in net. Penn State's Drew Adams had nine stops in 60:22. Penn State had 35 shots in the game, the Buckeyes 32.
