|STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - March 1, 2003 - Penn State earned its first victory of
the season today after they defeated Fairfield 18-6 at Holuba Hall. Senior Luke
Ogelsby (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Haverford School) scored a hat trick in the third
quarter as the Lions scored nine straight goals.
As Penn State brought a 16-4 lead into the fourth quarter, both the Lions and Stags notched two goals each in the final 15 minutes of play. Sophomore Will Cutler (Vienna, Va./St. John's College) scored an extra man goal on an assist from junior Ben Cusson (Cromwell, Conn./St. Paul's). The Nittany Lions were successful in controlling the ball in the final minutes of play to clinch an 18-6 victory.
Seven different Lions scored in the third quarter as Penn State tallied nine straight goals. Sophomore Marc Young (Devon, Pa./The Haverford School) and freshman Greg Gurenlian (Springfield Pa./Springfield) each had one goal and one assist in the quarter as senior captain Chris Garrity (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) saw three shots and made three saves as he shut out the Stags in the period.
At one point in the quarter Penn State scored three goals in no more than 57 seconds.
The Nittany Lions outscored Fairfield in the second quarter 4-1. Senior Rob Booth (Gladwyne, Pa./The Haverford School) scored on a hard shot from top of the key on an assist from Ogelsby. Sophomore Will Jones (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha) scored his first goal of the season unassisted on a quick shot from the right of the crease. Both teams scored three goals in the first quarter. Fairfield struck first on a goal from A.J. Califano who finished the day with two goals. The quarter ended on a goal from John Eremus (Rosemont, Pa./The Haverford School) with one second left.
Goalkeeper Chris Garrity made six saves on 14 shots. Sophomore Josh LaGrow (Skaneateles, N.Y./Christian Brothers-Academy) and junior Mike Stoltz (Sparks, Md./Hereford) also saw time in the match facing eight shots.
