|The Mount men's lacrosse team lost at Penn State, 14-5, on Tuesday night at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. Eric Seifert and Tilghman Herring each had two goals in the loss. The Mount falls to 4-4 on the season while Penn State improved to 3-5.|
Penn State took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. The Nittany Lions got the scoring started with a Brian Boyle goal just over three minutes into the game on a feed from Nate Whitaker. Patrick Heim added a goal just under a minute later for a two-goal lead. Eric Seifert got the Mount on the scoreboard with his sixth goal of the year with 2:14 left in the quarter, but Boyle answered that goal just seven seconds later. Dan Hatton scored with 22 seconds left in the quarter, coming from behind the cage and beating the Penn State keeper with a diving shot to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Mount cut the deficit to 5-4 at the half. Eric Seifert and Tilghman Herring sandwiched goals around Will Cutler's goal for Penn State. The Nittany Lions held a 24-15 advantage in shots in the first half, but Mount goalkeeper Dan Whitehurst made eight saves in the half to keep the Mount in the game.
Penn State took control of the game with seven unanswered goals in the third quarter. John Eremus, Patrick Heim and Will Cutler each had two goals and Nate Whitaker one in the run. After another Eremus goal to start the fourth quarter, Tilghman Herring notched his second goal of the game to break the Penn State run. Tommy Zichelli rounded out the scoring for Penn State with 1:34 left in the game.
The Mount visits Canisius on Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m. in a key Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.
