Providence vs. Hartford

The Game Story:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Hartford, 8-7, in non-conference action on Tuesday, March 22 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. Hartford's Josh Wasson-McQuiggie led all scorers with four goals in the game as the Hawks captured their first victory of the season and improve to 1-3 overall. The Friars fall to 1-5 overall with the loss.

Providence was led offensively by senior Dan Giuntini (Floral Park, N.Y.), senior Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.). The trio posted two goals apiece in the loss. Junior Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.) scored one goal for Providence. Hollister added two assists in the game to lead PC with four points overall. Sophomore Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) also was credited with an assist.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the game as Hollister connected off a pass from Ryan just 2:05 into the first quarter. The Hawks answered with two goals of their own to close out the first quarter with a 2-0 advantage. Matt Holman struck first, unassisted at 10:45. Wasson-McQuiggie scored his first goal of the day with 49-second left on the clock on an assist from Will Volet.

Giuntini opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal assisted by Hollister at the 12:53 mark to tie the game, 2-2. Bundra put the Friars ahead (3-2) with 11:43 on the clock. Bundra's goal also was assisted by Hollister. Hartford tied the game 38-seconds (3-3) later on an unassisted goal from Tim Chisholm. Providence scored two-straight goals to take a 5-3 advantage in the second quarter on goals from Bundra and Giuntini as 10:17 and 8:13, respectively. Both goals were unassisted. Hartford closed out the first half of play with three unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead into halftime. Holman netted his second goal of the game at 6:36 off an assist from Chisolm. Wasson-McQuiggie then scored two-consecutive goals at 4:27 and 3:47. His first goal in that span was assisted by Andrew Rohmer.

The Friars held the Hawks scorless in the third quarter and scored a goal of their own to tie the game, 6-6, at the five-minute mark. Kelly scored the goal for PC, unassisted.

Hartford took a 7-6 lead 1:41 into the fourth quarter as Wasson-McQuiggie registered his fourth goal of the game on an assist from Brian Tilley. The Friars' tied the game, 8-8, on an unassisted goal from Hollister with 11:36 left to play. Hartford's John Waterman scored the game winner with 10:05 remaining in the game, unassisted.

Providence outshot Hartford, 36-27, and held the advantage in groundballs, 30-27. Senior goalkeeper Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started for PC between the pipes and played 30 minutes. He collected eight saves and one groundball. Sophomore Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) entered the game for PC at the beginning of the second half and made two saves. McMinn took the loss as he allowed six of Hartford's eight goals prior to halftime. Franklin Pargh earned the victory in goal for Hartford with eight saves.

Providence (1-5, 0-1 MAAC) will return to action on Saturday, April 26 against VMI at Noon. The game will be played in Lexington, Va.
