Providence vs. Holy Cross

The Game Story:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior John Hannan (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored four goals as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Providence, 11-8, on Saturday evening in non-conference action at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 5-8 overall, while the Friars fall to 1-10 overall.

Junior captain James Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) and senior Matt Boylan (Kings Park, N.Y.) each posted two goals and one assist for three points. Kennedy now has 62 goals and 37 assists for 99 career points. Senior captain A.J. Guarente (Gaithersburg, Md.) was outstanding as he won 16 of 23 face-offs.

The Friars were led by Andrew Barton who tallied two goals and three assists for five points. Jake Nolan posted one goal and three assists for four points.

After Greg FitzMaurice gave the Friars a 1-0 lead just 40 seconds after the opening face-off, Kennedy tied the game at 1-1 just nine seconds later off a pass from sophomore Kyle Kadlick (West Roxbury, Mass.). Matthew Mueller then scored a man-up goal off a pass by Jake Nolan to give Providence a 2-1 advantage, but just 12 seconds later, Hannan found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore John Daugherty (Stafford, Va.) to tie the contest. The Crusaders took the lead when Hannan scored off an assist by freshman Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.). Hannan increased the lead to 4-2 with 8:21 remaining when he netted a man-up goal off a pass from Boylan. Hannan now has three hat-tricks this season and six for his career. Niall Cahill cut the lead to 4-3 with 4:31 left in the first quarter with a goal off a pass from Barton. Hannan then netted his fourth goal of the game to increase the lead to 5-3 off a pass by Kennedy for the last goal of the quarter. After Kadlick scored to give the Crusaders a 6-3 lead with 3:01 left in the second quarter, Barton netted a goal with 42 seconds remaining as the Crusaders took a 6-4 lead to the half.

Providence posted the first three goals of the third quarter to take a 7-6 lead. But the Crusaders responded by scoring five straight goals to take an 11-7 advantage. Morici tied the game at 7-7 and then senior Nick Rabiecki (Maplewood, N.J.) netted a goal at 1:24 left in the third quarter. After Boylan netted two straight goals, including his first career game-winner, Kennedy scored a man-down goal with 1:10 left. J.T. Weber scored the last goal of the game with 36 seconds left for the 11-8 final. The Crusaders improve to 3-3 on their opponent's home field this season.

Sophomore goalie Kenny O'Connor (Latham, N.Y.) made six saves to improve to 4-7 on the season. Christian Dzwilewski posted 16 saves. Holy Cross outshot Providence, 47-27, while the Crusaders picked up 29 ground balls and the Friars posted 16. The Crusaders went 1-3 on extra-man opportunities and the Friars went 4-10.
