|PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to
Mount St. Mary's, 14-11, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)
match-up on Monday, April 14 in Providence, R.I. It marks the first loss
for the Friars in conference play this season, as they fall to 4-7 overall
and 4-1 in the MAAC.
The Friars were led offensively by sophomore Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J.) who each tallied four goals and one assist. Senior Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) finished the game with five points on three goals and two assists. Sophomores John Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore David Krasnica (Mendham, N.J.) were credited with two assists each.
The Mountaineers got a huge offensive game from senior Josh Warfield, who led all scorers with seven points on four goals and three assists. Sophomore Daniel Hatton netted a game-high five goals in the win. Ian Cassidy contributed two goals to the Mountaineer effort, while Matt Warner finished the game with one goal and two assists and Kevin Merlin added one goal.
The Friars trailed 4-1 in the first quarter, but rallied to score two late goals in the first quarter and added two more within the first two minutes of the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead. The Mountaineers rebounded and scored four unanswered goals to take a 8-5 lead into halftime.
The Mountaineers extended their lead in the third quarter with three-straight goals to earn an 11-5 edge, before PC's Russell halted the run with an unassisted goal at the 4:57 mark of the third to make the score 11-6. Both teams would score one more goal each in the third, as Mount St. Mary's took a 12-7 lead into the final session.
In the fourth quarter, the Friars staged a furious comeback with four unanswered goals to get within one point of the Mountaineers (12-11). In the comeback Bosco and Russell netted two goals each. However, Providence would remain scoreless the rest of the way and the Mount would tack on two more goals for the final score (14-11).
Sophomore Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded seven saves in goal for Providence in the loss, while Dave Lambour took the win for the Mountaineers with 11 saves.
Providence (4-7, 4-1 MAAC) will face Manhattan in MAAC action on Wednesday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at the University of Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y.
