ROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse program fell to Rutgers, 12-6, in its BIG EAST home opener on Saturday, March 15 at Hendricken Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars move to 3-4 (0-1 BIG EAST) on the season, while Rutgers improves to 5-2 (1-0 BIG EAST). Freshman attack Alex Corboy (College Park, Md.) led Providence with a hat trick. Rutgers jumped out to an early lead and went on a 5-0 run in the first quarter. Providence opened the second quarter with a goal from freshman Joseph Fitzpatrick (Rockville, Md.). Rutgers responded with three consecutive goals to hold an 8-1 advantage with 7:46 left to play in the half. Corboy and senior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) found the back of the cage in the final minutes of the half to close the Scarlet Knights' lead to five at the break, 8-3. Corboy tallied back-to-back goals to start the third quarter to pull within three of Rutgers, 8-5 (10:29). Rutgers answered with two goals to extend their lead to 10-5. In the final 15 minutes of play the Friars were outscored by Rutgers, 2-1. Senior goalie Tyler Himes (Spring City, Pa.) played 58:21 minutes in goal for the Friars and collected 15 saves. Providence returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 when the Friars take on cross-town rival Brown. The Friars and Bears are set to face-off at 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I.
