Providence vs. Saint Joseph's

The Game Story:
EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated St. Joseph's, 9-4, on Sunday, May 6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship game to earn the program's third berth to the NCAA Tournament since 2004. The MAAC Tournament was held at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.

St. Joseph's got on the board at the 10:01 mark of the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead as Steve Varga connected on an unassisted goal. Graduate student Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.) answered with back-to-back goals at 4:35 and 3:43 to give the Friars a 2-1 lead going into the second quarter.

Providence sophomore Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) opened the scoring in the second quarter as he connected on an unassisted goal just 1:05 into the action. Labadini's goal gave the Friars a 3-1 advantage. Alex McColough got the Hawks back within one (3-2) at the 12:52 mark on an unassisted goal. PC regained a two-goal lead at 10:46 as senior Bennett Murphy (Princeton, N.J.) scored off a feed from senior Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.). Senior Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.) gave the Friars a 5-2 edge going into halftime as he tallied a goal with 2:07 left in the first half off a feed from Labadini.

Junior Devin McBride (Marblehead, Mass.) put PC ahead, 6-2, just eight-seconds into the third quarter. Ryan was credited with the assist. McBride struck once again off a feed from Ryan at the 9:01 mark to give the Friars a five-goal advantage (7-2). The Friars notched their third goal of the quarter as Labadini threw a clearing pass the length of the field and Murphy found the back of the cage with just one second remaining on the clock. Providence took an 8-2 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

Junior Robert Lamontagne (Pittsford, N.Y.) got into the act for PC with his first goal of the game at the 12:06 mark of the fourth quarter. Lamontagne's goal was assisted by McBride. St. Joseph's halted PC's run of six-straight goals as Mike O'Neill found the back of the cage with 9:34 remaining. O'Neill's goal was assisted by Alex Lopes. St. Joseph's tallied another goal as Varga netted his second of the day with just 57-seconds left in the game off a feed from Steve O'Brien.

Senior goalkeeper Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) earned the victory between the pipes for PC with eight saves. Erik Hotaling made nine stops for St. Joseph's.

Providence will find out who they are playing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on the evening of Sunday, May 6. The NCAA selection show for the Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship will be televised live between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on ESPN U and ESPN News.
