Providence vs. Vermont

The Game Story:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Vermont, 6-4, in a non-conference match-up on Saturday, March 29 in Providence, R.I. The loss marks the third-straight for the Friars, who fall to 1-4 overall on the season. Providence junior Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) led the Friars with two goals and one assist. Lowell Thompson led the Vermont attack with two goals.

Vermont jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as they held the Friars scoreless in the first quarter. Jesse Shaw connected on UVM's first goal of the afternoon off an assist from Mike Maher at the 9:13 mark. Doug Moses scored the Catamounts second goal of the day at the 3:13 mark of the first quarter unassisted.

In the second quarter, Vermont took a 3-0 lead on an unassisted goal from Denning Coates with 12:14 showing on the clock. The Friars finally got on the scoreboard with 5:10 remaining in the first half as Kornobis netted his first goal of the day off an assist from senior Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.), to make the score 3-1.

In the third quarter, Thompson gave the Catamounts a 4-1 lead as he controlled the face-off and took the ball right to the cage for the score, just 11 seconds into the action (14:49). PC rallied to tie the game with three-straight goals; two in the third quarter and one goal to begin the fourth quarter. Kornobis connected for his second goal off of another Meehan assist with 2:43 remaining in the third. Sophomore Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) made the score 4-3 as he scored a goal with 1:12 left in the third off an assist from sophomore John Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.).

Providence freshman Mark Seyer (Chesterfield, Mo.) tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth quarter with 11:20 remaining in the game on an assist from Kornobis, but it would prove to be the final Friar goal of the afternoon. The Catamounts went on to score two goals in the fourth quarter to take the 6-4 victory. Thompson netted his second goal of the day at the 4:25 mark as Austin Humphries was credited with the assist. UVM's Nick Allen closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal 29 seconds later (3:56).

Sophomore Andrew McMinn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took the loss in goal for Providence and finished the game with 10 saves. UVM's Michael Gabel earned the win with eight saves in 60 minutes of action, while allowing just four Friar goals.

Providence (1-4, 1-0 MAAC) will return to action on Monday, March 31 against Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game at 3:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at Glay Field on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
