Quinnipiac vs. Hartford

The Game Story:
HAMDEN, Conn. – Gary Messina (West Islip, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Quinnipiac men’s lacrosse team improved to 6-0 with an 8-5 victory against the University of Hartford, Saturday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. Anthony Poerio (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) added two goals for the Bobcats. The six wins match last season’s total, and account for the Bobcats’ best start to a season since winning 12 straight to open the 2001 campaign.

Garret Kerr (Inglewood, Ontario), Todd Kaiser (Summit, N.J.), Jake Glebocki (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Ted Dimond (Marblehead, Mass.) also scored. Mike Lamagna (Andover, Mass.) added an assist for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac goalie Kevin Benzing improved to 6-0, making 11 saves. Hartford’s Jon McMahon (0-5) made seven saves in defeat.

Justin Bearse led the Hawks with a pair of goals while Tom Harris, Jacob Eustice and Brian Tilley also scored. Daniel Clough assisted on two goals and Michael Cudmore added an assist.

Glebocki got the Bobcats on the board first, going the length of the field with Quinnipiac down a man. He sent a shot from the left side past McMahon for the goal just over three minutes into the game. Harris responded just over four minutes later on Cudmore’s assist with a man advantage. Cudmore passed from behind the net to Harris on the left post for the easy score.

Quinnipiac then reeled off four straight goals to open a four-goal advantage, 5-1. Poerio scored both his goals in the span, while Messina and Kerr also added markers. Poerio got the scoring started off Lamagna’s assist with just 28 seconds remaining in the first, before Messina added his goal two minutes into the second. Kerr and Poerio then scored within 26 seconds of each other with 8:41 and 8:15 remaining in the second, respectively. The latter came with Quinnipiac enjoying a man advantage.

The Hawks closed the period with a pair of goals to cut the deficit in half prior to halftime. Eustice scored the first with just under five minutes remaining while Bearse scored just over a minute later off a Clough assist.

The Bobcats made it a 6-3 game on Messina’s second goal with 12:26 remaining in the third, but the Hawks closed the deficit to one with goals by Tilley and Bearse prior to the third period horn. Clough assisted on what would be the Hawks’ final goal of the game.

Kaiser netted an insurance goal with 9:19 remaining in regulation and the Bobcats successfully fended off Hartford for the duration of the fourth quarter. Dimond added a goal with just 1.8 seconds remaining to account for the 8-5 final score.

Quinnipiac is idle two weeks prior to its Great Western Lacrosse League opener, March 29, against Ohio State. The Bobcats play host to the Buckeyes in a 1 p.m. start.
