|Mike Stottler scored four goals and Eric Trama added a goal and three assists to lead the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team to its first victory of the season in its home opener, 10-8 over the Marist Red Foxes in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while the Red Foxes fall to 1-1.
Marist got on the scoreboard first on the first of Sean Sweeney's three goals on the day to take a 1-0 lead with 8:04 to go in the first frame. However, Quinnipiac responded by scoring five straight goals, four of them by Stottler and one by Jimmy Montana, to take a 5-1 lead with 8:29 to go in the second quarter. After a goal by the Red Foxes cut it to 5-2, the Bobcats countered by scoring three straight goals to make it 8-2. Montana scored his second marker of the game and Andy Pelletier netted two goals during the run. Marist scored the final goal of the half to make it 8-3, Quinnipiac at the intermission.
The Red Foxes netted two straight goals after the break to cut the Bobcats'lead to 8-5 with 10:48 to go in the third quarter. Quinnipiac responded thanks to a goal by Trama to make it 9-5. After a goal by the Red Foxes pulled them to within 9-6, Quinnipiac's Leigh DiPace tallied the third quarter's final goal to make it a four goal game, 10-6, heading into the final frame.
Billy Duerr scored his only goal with 7:22 left in the game to make the score 10-7, Quinnipiac. However, the Bobcats' defense held strong and only allowed one more goal the rest of the way to clinch the 10-8 victory.
Stottler and Trama led Quinnipiac with four points apiece, while Josh Murray (two assists), Pelletier (two goals), DiPace (one goal and one assist) and Montana (two goals) all had two points for the Bobcats.
Marist was led by Sweeney, who scored three goals and Duerr, who chipped in with a goal and two assists.
James Nastro made 11 saves in net for the Bobcats to pick up his first win of the season. Marist goalie Steve Gravino made 16 saves in the losing effort.
Quinnipiac will travel to Piscataway, NJ to take on the sixth-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday, March 13, at 1:00 p.m.
