Quinnipiac vs. Wagner
March 4, 2010
The Game Story:
HAMDEN, Conn. - Fifteen different players scored goals as the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-3 win Thursday afternoon against Wagner at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, N.Y.) scored three goals and had a game-high four points to lead the Bobcats to their first win of the season, evening their overall mark at 1-1. Wagner drops to 0-2 this season after the 17-goal loss.

Quinnipiac's 20 goals marked just the fifth time in program history that the team reached that scoring figure in a game and the first since the 2002 season. Thursday's win was also the second time that the Bobcats defeated the Seahawks while scoring 20 goals, as Quinnipiac handled Wagner, 20-6, on Mar. 25, 2001.

Haggerty scored the game's opening two goals in the first four minutes. Wagner's Will Macumber scored his team's first at the 5:43 mark of the opening quarter to pull to within one, 2-1. That would be as close as the Seahawks would get as the Bobcats went on a 14-0 run over the next two and a half quarters to run away with the victory.

After Alex DeAlmeida (Point Pleasant, N.J.) scored in the final minutes of the first quarter to give Quinnipiac the 3-1 lead, the Bobcats exploded with eight goals in the second. All eight tallies came from different members of the team, with Haggerty scoring once and adding an assist and DeAlmeida assisting on goals from juniors Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.) and Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.).

The Bobcats' attack was subdued in the third quarter, scoring just twice in the 15-minute period. Junior Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.) scored both Quinnipiac goals in the stanza, with fellow junior Ted Diamond (Marblehead, Mass.) assisting on the second of the two.

Diamond, DeAlmedia and freshman Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.) each recorded two assists in the game, to help the Bobcats finish with 11 as a team. Seniors Mitch Cooper (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Garrett Kerr (Caledon, Ontario) started off the fourth quarter with goals just over a minute apart to cap the run and give the Bobcats a 15-1 lead.

Two goals from Wagner's Sean Travis and Mike Payson midway through the fourth quarter injected some life into the Seahawk's bench. The two-goal burst was short lived as four Quinnipiac players scored goals in the final five minutes. Sophomores Zach Pall (Setauket, N.Y.) and Derek Flynn (Monroe, Conn.), Adam Dahlgard (Bethany, Conn.) and freshman Bredan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) all netted tallies in a span of 1:27 to seal the win, 20-3.

Quinnipiac used four goalies in the game, with starter Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) earning the win with eight saves in 28:18 of action. Senior Jamie Prudden (Andover, Mass.) came in to relieve Benzing and stopped three shots in 21:47 of scoreless play.

The Bobcats dominated in every facet of the game, outshooting the Seahawks, 51-21, while also winning 22-of-26 faceoffs in the game. Quinnipiac more than doubled up on Wagner in ground balls, collecting 48 to its opponents' 22 in the game.
