March 5, 2002
PISCATAWAY, NJ- The Albany Great Danes (1-1) were able to notch their first victory of the season today, beating Rutgers (1-3), 8-6. Today marked the last
game of a four game homestand for RU to start the season.
The low-scoring affair was close throughout the entire 60 minutes, during a cold and windy day in Piscataway, NJ. The teams were tied three times during the
first half, including 2-2 after the first quarter, and 3-3 at halftime. Albany came out strong to start the second half and was able to build a lead by out-scoring
Rutgers 3-1 in the third quarter. The Great Danes held a 6-4 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play and struck first in the final stanza, as Brendan
Russell found the back of the net with 11:12 left. Ken Springer (Ridgewood, NJ) answered at the 8:48 mark for RU with a goal off a pass from Tim White
(Rockville Center, NY). White finished the game with a
team-best two assists. Four minutes later, Sean Donnellan scored for UA to give the Great Danes an 8-5 lead with just over 4 minutes left to play. Springer
then tallied his third goal of the game with :38 second left to end the scoring.
RU freshman goalie Craig Lutwyler (Wyckoff, NJ) played well in his first career start, making 10 saves. Kevin Rae, a freshman for the Great Danes, played a
great game in goal, making numerous spectacular saves en route to a 10 save effort.
The Rutgers men's lacrosse team will take to the road for the first time this season, as it travels to Indiana to face Notre Dame on Sat., March 9, at 1:00 PM.
