|The Game Story:|
|PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior Colin Checcio (Wayne, Pa.) scored four goals, including the game-winner with six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, to help guide the Rutgers men's lacrosse team (6-6) to a 10-9 win over Army (6-8) Wednesday night at Yurcak Field. The win snapped RU's eight-game losing streak against the Black Knights, dating back to the 1999 season, and also marked Rutgers' 20th all-time victory against Army.|
With the win, Rutgers also evened its overall season record at 6-6 while extending the Black Knights' losing streak to seven. Checcio was one of six Scarlet Knights to score in the game, as RU out-shot the Black Knights, 37-29, and more than doubled Army in groundballs (18-7). The game was a tale of two halves, with a combined five goals scored in the opening half and 14 in the second.
Army scored the first goal of the game, but RU's offense responded by netting four unanswered goals. Checcio scored Rutgers' first goal of the game with 1:51 remaining in the opening quarter and the teams found themselves knotted at one after the opening quarter.
Matt Gaines (Abindgon, Md.), Jeff Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Checcio then scored one goal apiece in the second quarter to give RU a 4-1 lead. The Scarlet Knights' defense held Army to just two shots and zero goals as Rutgers went into halftime three-goals up on the Black Knights.
Army's offense came out strong to start the second half, as Ryan Chase scored at the 13:23 mark to cut RU's lead to two (4-2). Army continued to attack RU starting goalie Bill Olin (Horseheads, N.Y.), scoring four third-quarter goals on just six shots. Rutgers' responded with four scores of its own during the quarter, and the Scarlet Knights held an 8-5 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Army continued its push on offense, scoring the first goal in the fourth quarter with 13:09 remaining. Mike Dugan (Summit, N.J.) responded with a goal of his own but the Black Knights then erupted for three-unanswered goals, including the game-tying score by Justin Bokmeyer with 37 seconds left on the clock.
The Scarlet Knights won the ensuing face-off and Checcio got possession of the ball. With six seconds remaining, Checcio then fired the game-winning shot to give RU the victory.
Olin finished the game with 10 saves, including three critical stops in the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Knights also won 17-of-24 face-offs and were successful on 11 of their 15 clear attempts.
Bokmeyer led the Black Knights with five goals and also added in an assist. Goalie Adam Fullerton made eight saves against Rutgers but allowed the 10 goals, the third-highest goal total by an Army opponent this season.
The Scarlet Knights will close out the 2007 season when they host ECAC opponent UMass on Saturday, May 5, at 1:00 p.m. RU's seniors will honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
