March 10, 2005
The Game Story:
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) and sophomore Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) combined for seven goals as the 12th-ranked Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (2-0) earned an 11-4 victory over Manhattan on Thursday in Piscataway.

Blomquist opened the scoring less then two minutes into the game, and junior Austin Rodgers (Towson, MD) added his first goal of the season with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter to give RU a 2-0 edge. With just one second remaining in the opening period, Blomquist scored again, pushing the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Manhattan’s Eugene Tanner put the Jaspers on the scoreboard early in the second period (12:55), but Doctor responded with the first of his three goals less then a minute later. He added another score with just 58 seconds left in the first half to convert a man-up opportunity.

After taking a 5-2 lead into halftime, the Scarlet Knights received a boost when freshman face-off specialist Ted Melanson (Baltimore, MD), who won the opening draw of the third period, picked up the ground ball and fired a shot past Robert Busweiler to give Rutgers a 6-2 lead. The Scarlet Knights would score three more times in the period to take a seven-goal advantage into the fourth quarter.

While Blomquist (four goals, one assist) and Doctor (three goals, one assist) led the offensive attack, Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) dished out three assists and Melanson won 10-of-17 face-offs. Rutgers outshot Manhattan 43-23 and had 33 groundballs. Manhattan was hurt by seven penalties, four of which were called in the fourth quarter.

In goal, junior Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 10 saves – five in each half. Tanner scored twice for the Jaspers while Chris Oppito and Jeremy Marrano each had one score.

Rutgers returns to action on Tuesday, March 15, when it travels to Towson, MD, to face the ninth-ranked Tigers. Opening face-off is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
