The Game Story:
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team defeated Saint Joseph’s (0-4) tonight at the Rutgers Astroturf Field, 15-4, to move to 4-0 for the first time since the 1975 season. The Scarlet Knights used a 12-goal run during parts of the first, second and third quarters, while shutting the Hawks out for 39:09, to gain the victory.

This marks the second time this season that Rutgers has shut out an opponent for at least 30 minutes. On Feb. 26, the Knights shut out Manhattan for a span of 34:15 in a 7-3 victory.

SJU scored with 4:11 left in the first quarter to take the lead, 2-1, but Rutgers then held the Hawks scoreless until the 10:02 mark of the fourth quarter, while building a 13-3 lead.

Nick Schmidt (Hicksville, NY) started the scoring with a goal at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter to put RU ahead 1-0. SJU’s Chris Spay and Kevin McGrann put Rutgers behind for just the second time this season with their goals at 6:52 and 4:11, but Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) responded with two goals in the span of 55 seconds to begin the 12-goal spurt.

During the 12-goal run, Jeff Duca (Fair Lawn, NJ), Ken Springer (Ridgewood, NJ), Tim White (Rockville Center, NY), Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) and Blomquist each found the back of the net twice. The other two goals came from the sticks of freshman Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA) and Schmidt.

RU freshman goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) allowed just two goals while saving eight shots in three quarters. Classmate Dan Benson (Fairfax, VA) played the fourth quarter for RU, making three saves and allowing two goals. Havalchak’s goals-against-average now stands at a paltry 5.31, while his save percentage is .718.

Rutgers will return to action on Saturday, March 8, against Albany at the Rutgers Astroturf Field. The game, originally scheduled to be played at Albany, will begin at 12 p.m.
