The Game Story:
FAIRFIELD, CT (March 15, 2003) - The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team used an eight-goal fourth period surge to come away with a 15-12 win over Butler University Saturday afternoon. Senior Erick Perez (Locust Valley, NY) had another outstanding performance with five goals and two assists in leading the Pioneers to their third-straight victory. Today's win marks the first time a Sacred Heart team has defeated a squad from the Great Western Lacrosse League.

The Pioneers got out of the gates early, running out to a 5-1 lead in the first period. The Bulldogs came right back, scoring six straight goals at the end of the first and start of the second periods to take a 7-5 lead. Sacred Heart battled back just before the half to knot the score a 7-7 on goals by Perez and sophomore Christian Lynch (Northport, NY).

Butler owned the third period, building a 10-7 lead on goals by Ryan Ward, Dan Torgersen, and Jason Soporito while holding Sacred Heart scoreless. The Pioneers found an answer over the final 15 minutes, rattling off five-straight goals, two by freshman Matthew Robideau (Massena, NY) followed by Thomas Latronica (West Islip, NY), Stephan Grabow (Commack, NY) and Perez to take a 12-11 lead at the eight minute mark. Butler's Ward, who finished with four goals and an assist on the day, answered at 5:48 to tie it at 12-12.

The Pioneers would have the final say as Perez netted two and Grabow one over the final three minutes to give SHU the win. Joining Perez in the scoring column was Grabow who finished with three tallies and two assists for five points and Robideau who netted three in the win.

The Pioneers, who improve to 3-2 on the young season, got 12 saves from freshman Thomas Hind (Farmingdale, NY). For Butler, now 3-3, Bredan Walker saw the majority of time in net, finishing with 14 saves of his own.
