|The Game Story:|
|FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) scored the game-winner in the fourth overtime as the No. 16/19 University of Denver men's lacrosse team topped Sacred Heart 13-12 in a Saturday afternoon thriller.|
DU moves to 5-2 with the win. Sacred Heart slides to 3-3.
"It certainly wasn't one of our best games," said head coach Bill Tierney. "Sacred Heart out-played us in that fourth quarter, scoring five in the final eight minutes of play to tie the game and force overtime. We did not play disciplined Pioneer lacrosse and it almost cost us the game. Sacred Heart played with great emotion and really took us out of our game. We have a lot of work to do if we expect to be an NCAA Tournament team."
Juniors Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) and Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) led Denver with five points each. Sophomore Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) added three goals and an assist for the Pioneers.
Redshirt-junior Brendan DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) caused three turnovers and sophomore Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) snagged seven ground balls for Denver, while finishing 20-of-32 on face-offs. Freshman goalie Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) made 15 saves, recording his fourth win of the season, while Noble led the Pioneers with 11 ground balls.
Law scored twice in the first quarter, but Denver trailed 3-2 at the end of one. The Pioneers got goals from Law, Demopoulos, Matthews, senior Andrew Lay (Denver, Colo.) and another one from Demopoulos during a 5-2 second quarter. The Pioneers outshot Sacred Heart 16-9 in the second quarter and took a 7-5 lead into intermission.
Denver got goals from Matthews, senior Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Demopoulos in the third quarter and led 10-7 going into the final fifteen.
Noble and Baxter scored goals for the Pioneers to open the fourth quarter, but Sacred Heart went on a 5-0 run to end the quarter and force overtime.
After three scoreless overtimes, Noble netted the game winner with 3:21 to play in the fourth OT.
Bryan Badolato led Sacred Heart with four goals. Alex Miller had two goals and an assist and Zach Frank made 21 saves in the loss.
Denver outshot Sacred Heart 48-45 and had a 56-44 ground ball advantage. Denver won 20-of-32 face-offs and cleared 24-of-29 attempts. Sacred Heart was 26-of-32 on clearing attempts.
The Pioneers return to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium to host Air Force Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. MT. Fans can watch the game live on Pioneer Vision or follow the action on Live Stats and CoverItLive, both available at DenverPioneers.com.
