The Game Story:
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena men's lacrosse team coasted to a 15-8 victory over league rival Mount St. Mary's (1-6, 1-2) this afternoon in Loudonville. Freshman attackman Ryan Duggan (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) delivered a career performance as he led all scorers with seven points in Siena's (6-3, 3-0) fourth straight victory. Fellow attackman Matt Girsh (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) tied Duggan with a team-high four goals.

"It was a great all around effort today," said head coach Brian Brecht. "The offense stepped up and took advantage of their opportunities, and the defense left it all on the field as they do everyday."

The Saints overwhelmed Mount St. Mary's right from the opening face-off. Matt Leithead (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), a freshman midfielder, put Siena on the board at the 11:46 mark when he sent a shot past the Mountaineers goaltender. Just over a minute later, Shaun Dunn (Amityville, N.Y./Chaminade) extended the lead to 2-0. Dunn finished the contest with two points.

Siena cruised into halftime with an 8-2 advantage thanks to two first half goals from Kenny Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), Matt Donovan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Duggan. The Saints controlled the groundball battle in the first two quarters picking up 24 to the Mount's 17.

Sophomore midfielder Scott Montgomery (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was superior on face-offs. Montgomery won six of his first eight attempts. He also picked up a game-high nine groundballs.

"Scott was phenomenal on face-offs today. He battled hard and controlled the tempo of the game," said Brecht.

The second half proved to be all Siena. Mount St. Mary's midfielder Eric Seifert took advantage of a man-up opportunity just 18 seconds into the half to cut the Saints lead to five. However, Girsh retaliated soon thereafter with a crafty goal at the 8:43 mark. Girsh drove hard on the right side of the cage, got past his defender and flipped a backhanded shot into the back of the net.

Midfielder Charly Rogener (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) won the very next face-off and took advantage of a fast break opportunity. Rogener took a feed from James Mikel (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit), while charging down field, and connected on his first goal of the season to put the Saints up 10-3.

Girsh opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive goals to give the Saints a comfortable advantage (15-5). The Mountaineers managed three late goals, but this proved to be too little too late as Siena ran off with a 15-8 decision.

Freshman goaltender Brent Herbst (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) registered seven saves in the winning effort. With the victory, Herbst improves to 4-1 between the pipes this season.

The Saints will engage in their final non-conference game of the season when they take on #18 Stony Brook Tuesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
