April 21, 2007
The Game Story:
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena men's lacrosse team won its third straight game this afternoon as they topped league rival Saint Joseph's (4-10, 4-3) 13-7 on Siena Field. Senior co-captain Matt Donovan (Northport, N.Y.) delivered a memorable Senior Day performance as he exploded for a game high seven points. Fellow attackman Matt Girsh (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) delivered three goals and two assists in the winning effort. With the victory, the Saints earn the program's first invitation into the MAAC Championships.

Siena (9-4, 6-0) got on the scoreboard just 40 seconds into the contest when Girsh finished on a feed from Donovan. The duo enjoyed a first quarter scoring spree as they combined for all six goals within the first 7:16 of the contest.

With 11:04 on the clock, freshman defender Faus Bernabo (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) picked up a groundball and got the Saints fast break running. Bernabo cruised down field and dished the ball to Girsh who connected on his third goal of the game.

Siena took an 8-2 advantage into the half thanks to second quarter scores by freshman Shaun Dunn (Amityville, N.Y./Chaminade) and Ryan Duggan (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). Duggan finished with four points on the afternoon.

The second half proved to be all Siena. Midfielders Chris Zarins (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) and Mike Whalen (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Putnam Valley) posted their sole goals early in the fourth quarter helping the Saints coast to a seven goal decision.

Freshman goaltender Brent Herbst (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) was brilliant once again between the pipes. He made seven saves on the afternoon leading to his seventh win this season.

The Saints overwhelmed the Hawks on face-offs going 15-for-23. Siena midfielder Scott Montgomery (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was responsible for 10 wins in 14 attempts.

Prior to the contest, the Saints honored seniors Brett Mathis (Maitland, Fla./Bishop Moore), Michael Aylward (Braintree, Mass./Braintree), Sean Weston (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), David Jalette (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) and Donovan in a pregame ceremony. Then at halftime, former Siena lacrosse standout Tony Asterino '81 was recognized as the program's all-time leading scorer.

The Saints improve to 9-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 league mark. The win secures at very least a share of the MAAC regular-season championship marking the first in program history.

Siena returns to action on Wednesday at Marist where they will look to secure the #1 seed in the MAAC tournament. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
