Saint Joseph's vs. Marist
March 24, 2007
The Game Story:
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team won its first game of 2007 in thrilling fashion, as junior attacker Steve Varga scored with 3:10 remaining in overtime to give the Hawks a 6-5 victory over the Marist Red Foxes in the conference opener for both squads. The goal was Varga's second of the afternoon and his sixth of the season.

Early on, the game looked to be a high-scoring affair, as Marist (0-6, 0-1 Metro Atlantic) got on the board just over a minute into the game. The Hawks equalized three minutes later on a goal by junior Steve O'Brien. Sophomore Alex Lopes had his first of two assists on the goal. Lopes also tallied a helper on Varga's overtime game-winner.

Despite the early scoring, things settled down and the goalkeepers took over. The second period was scoreless, and the teams went over 30 minutes without scoring until Marist's Paul Santavicca put the Red Foxes ahead with 10:12 left in the third. Saint Joseph's (1-6, 1-0 Metro Atlantic) scored twice in the next two minutes on goals by Varga and freshman Joe D'Avanzo. Lopes and senior Mike O'Neill added scores of their own to put the Hawks up 5-2 at the end of the third.

Much as SJU had taken over the third period, Marist controlled the fourth, scoring three times in the last 11:07 to send the game into overtime. Junior Pete O'Hara scored his second goal of the game for the Red Foxes to tie it up with just 12.2 seconds left in regulation.

In the extra frame, Marist goalkeeper Ryan Penner was caught out of his net on the pivotal play. Lopes evaded pressure and sent a pass in to Varga, who fired home the game-winning goal.

Between the pipes, sophomore keeper Erik Hotaling notched the win for the Hawks, making 16 saves. Penner turned away eight SJU shots.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, March 27 when they take on the Manhattan Jaspers in a rescheduled game at Finnesey Field. Game time is slated for 3:00 PM
