March 8, 2003
The Game Story:
PHILADELPHIA (03/08/03) - It took an extra two games, but the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team finally played its home opener on the Finnesey Field turf. They took advantage of the friendly confines and opened up a 8-3 lead to capture their home and MAAC opener, 9-7, over Wagner (0-2, 0-1 MAAC).

Freshman Keegan Wilkinson, who led the team with two goals and two assists on the day, kicked off the scoring at the 7:44 mark of the first quarter with a goal, assisted by junior Brian Mullan. Classmate Mark Lipscomb followed that goal three minutes later to give the Hawks (1-4, 1-0) a 2-0 lead. A sophomore Kevin McGrann goal from freshman Brian Ponne gave SJU an early 3-0 lead, but the Seahawks responded with two goals of their own to start the second quarter.

McGrann fired another goal at the 4:24 mark to give St. Joe's a 4-2 lead in a low scoring first half. The Hawks would own the third quarter, outscoring Wagner 4-2 in the period to take an 8-4 lead going into the fourth. Freshman Mike Kirlin scored his first collegiate goal in the spurt and senior Alex Heidenberger, freshman Chris Ortel, and Wilkinson also netted goals.

But Wagner would rally to score three of the final four goals to cut the final score to just 9-7. A Heidenberger from Wilkinson tally midway through the fourth would turn out to be the game-winner.

Sophomore cager Dan Morrissey made 11 saves to earn the win, while Phil Mackenzie stopped 15 in defeat. SJU held an advantage in shots, 43-30, ground balls, 36-26, and faceoffs, 14-of-19.

Wilkinson led the way with two goals and two assists, while Heidenberger added another two goals. For Wagner, Kevin Zulauf scored three goals on a team-high 16 shots.
