|Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 17-7 win over Hartford in America East men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Adam Marksberry, George LaFlare and freshman Matt O'Connor each scored three goals to help SB move to 6-5 overall, 2-2 in conference play. Hartford remained winless and fell to 0-11, 0-4.
LaFlare jump-started the Seawolves in the first quarter, scoring the first two goals of the game as SB took control early. O'Connor found the net with 2:58 remaining in the first off a feed from Jason Cappadoro and the Seawolves led 3-0 after one quarter.
Marksberry extended the lead to 4-0 at 13:24 of the second before Hartford's Mark Ross got the visitors on the board 1:15 later. Stony Brook erased any hope of the Hawks getting back into the game when LaFlare and Cappadoro found the net 55 seconds apart as the Seawolves scored six of the final eight goals of the quarter to take a 10-3 advantage into halftime.
Cappadoro, Marksberry and Mike Kirschner scored the first three goals of the third quarter to expand SB's lead to 13-3 and the Seawolves cruised to victory.
Marksberry (3g, 2a) and Cappadoro (2g, 3a) each finished with five points on the afternoon. It was Cappadoro's second straight five-point game following his five-goal effort in a win over Siena on Wednesday. Kirschner added a pair of goals and an assist while goalie Brendan Callahan made eight saves to earn his sixth win of the season.
Hartford was led by Mike Gillis who finished with two goals and an assist. Goalie Jordan Karem stopped nine saves for the Hawks.
Stony Brook is back in action next Saturday when it travels to face conference foe UMBC. Face-off is 1 p.m.
