| Stony Brook, N.Y. - Devon Britts scored two goals and Greg Havalchak made 16 saves to lead Rutgers to a 6-3 win over Stony Brook Tuesday night at LaValle Stadium. The loss drops Stony Brook to 2-4 while Rutgers improved to 4-3. Defense and good goaltending dominated the first quarter before Britts opened the scoring with 23 seconds remaining in the stanza. The Scarlet Knights built on their momentum in the second quarter, outscoring SB 4-0 during the period. Austin Rodgers cashed in on a man-up opportunity at 11:02 before Britts made it 3-0 at the 8:55 mark. Matt Gaines continued the Rutgers surge with an unassisted tally at 7:30 and after winning the ensuing face-off, Ted Melanson scored eight seconds later and RU held a 5-0 lead at the break. Stony Brook finally broke through when Ryan Maehr converted a feed from Rhys Duch for a man-up goal early in the third quarter. Bo Tripodi then sliced the lead to 5-2 off an assist from Cory Conway with 5:09 remaining in the third. Jason Cappadoro's goal with 14:13 remaining drew SB within 5-3 but Havalchak denied any chance of a comeback with several stellar saves down the stretch as part of an outstanding effort all night long. Stony Brook had three goals waved off due to crease violations on a night where it was held to its lowest goal total since March 6, 2004 when it scored only three goals in a loss to UMass. |
