| The Game Story: | |||||
| Despite a sparkling effort in goal from freshman Dan Shaughnessy (Sudbury, Mass.), the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team fell to No. 6/6 Virginia, 13-7, Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Shaughnessy, in just his third collegiate game, stopped 19 shots, including 11 in the second half. Virginia (3-0) outshot Stony Brook (1-2), 55-16, including 31-4 in the second half. Senior Jeff Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with two goals and two assists. Sophomores Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) and Mike Andreassi (Holbrook, N.Y.) also finished with two goals. Freshman Dylan Curry (East Meadow, N.Y.) tallied his first collegiate goal. Mark Cockerton led Virginia with five goals. Matt White added three goals and three assists for the Cavaliers, who are 11-0 all-time against SBU. Coach Jim Nagle's Reaction "I was so proud of our team's effort. This was our first game facing a team with Virginia's kind of speed. Our upperclassmen performed great, but our younger guys need to understand the mentality of playing a four-quarter game. But I certainly tip my hat to our younger guys. They are playing a lot and against some quality opponents. I'm very confident in our older guys' leadership. If our younger guys tap into their potential, we're going to be at a good point the rest of the season." |
