The Game Story:
SYRACUSE, NY -- Eleven different Syracuse goal scorers helped Syracuse advance in the NCAA Play-offs with a 21-13 victory against Albany in the Carrier Dome on Sunday. The Orange will meet Georgetown in second-round action next Sunday in Ithaca, N.Y.

Senior Michael Powell, the leading scorer in SU's long and rich history, led the Orange with three goals and three assists. Seniors Brian Nee and Alex Zink each added four goals and graduate student Kevin Dougherty tallied three goals. Albany was paced by freshman Merrick Thomson, who had six goals and one assist.

The 21-goal outburst was the most by an SU in the NCAA Play-offs since 1992 when the Orange defeated Johns Hopkins in the semifinals, 21-16. It tied the third-best play-off effort by Syracuse. The most recent 20-goal total for the Orange came in a 20-8 victory against Air Force in 2002. The last time it happened in the Carrier Dome was in 2000 when the Orange defeated Geogetown, 24-16.

Syracuse improved its record in first-game play-off outings to 23-2. It includes 22 consecutive triumphs.

Powell opened the game's scoring just 39 second in with a blast from straight away, his 40th of the year. Albany answered on goal's by Matt Green (13th) and Thomson (42), giving the Great Danes an advantage they held for 46 seconds.

Sophomore Brett Bucktooth knotted the score at 3-3 and senior Brian Nee continued a streak of five unanswered Orange goals with his 22nd and 23rd of the campaign. Powell then converted his 41st, a man-up tally, and his 42nd, to provide SU with a 6-2 advantage.

Albany battled back with three straight tallies, including two from Thomson (43, 44), to pull the Great Danes within one, 6-5. Powell found Nee on the doorstep and Nee (23) found the net with six seconds before the intermission to close out the first-half's scoring and provide SU was a 7-5 lead.

Syracuse scored the first six goals of the second half, including two from Dougherty (13,14). Albany finally answered with 1:46 remaining in the third, on a tally from junior Luke Daquino (20), but the Orange closed out the period with goals from sophomore Greg Rommel (10) and Dougherty (15).

Zink's second goal of the half (10th) and freshman Mike MacDonald's tally (3), gave SU a 17-6 margin less than two minutes into the fourth period. Albany, aided by a man-up goal, scored four of the next five but the Orange ended the threat with a three-goal stretch that featured two more from Zink (11, 12). Albany ended the game's scoring with three goals in the final two minutes.

Syracuse junior Jay Pfeifer finished with eight saves and just six goals against in three periods of work. Senior Nick Donatelli played the entire fourth period and made seven stops. Albany's Kevin Rae, a junior, had 15 saves before giving way to senior Chris Gill in the final minutes. SU out-shot the Danes, 50-42, which included a 41-22 edge after three periods.

Syracuse defeated Albany in a regular-season game on April 24, , 18-8.
