March 30, 2004
The Game Story:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior attackman Michael Powell (West Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) had four goals and two assists to help lead the No. 3-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team to a 16-10 victory against upstate New York rival Hobart at the Carrier Dome. The Orangemen are now 3-0 at home this season. They improved their season record to 5-1.

Powell had a goal and two assists in the first quarter to help SU jump out to a 7-1 lead. The Orange went ahead by as many as seven goals (8-1) when Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) scored at the 11:10 mark of the second quarter, but Hobart came back. The Statesmen closed to within four goals (9-5) by halftime. Hobart's leading scorer, Mark Williamson, scored two goals during the second period mini-run.

Hobart (3-4) crept even closer to within two goals (10-8) when Williamson netted his third goal of the game with 12:17 remaining in the third quarter. Powell slammed the door shut with a behind-the-back goal at the 10:35 mark and junior midfielder Jarett Park (Otisco, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) dashed to the goal for the second time of the game with 4:41 remaining which gave SU a 12-8 advantage.

Williamson registered his team-high fourth goal just 1:53 into the fourth quarter to pull Hobart to within 12-9, but Syracuse went on one of its patented runs and tallied the game's next four goals to build a 16-9 advantage. Face-off man Geoff Keough (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) fed Powell for his third goal of the game. Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) set up senior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) with 10:27 left in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) dodged his way to an unassisted tally at the 7:56 mark and Powell scored goal number four off an assist from Zack Wallace (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) just 31 seconds after Rommel found the back of the net.

Hobart's Mike Conklin scored a man-up goal off a pass from Williamson with 5:39 remaining in the contest for the game's final goal.

Powell, who is ranked second in the nation in scoring offense this week with 5.00 points per game, surpassed Rob Kavovit on SU's all-time scoring list. Kavovit recorded 246 points from 1993-97. Powell now ranks eighth in career points with 249 and needs 39 more to break the school's scoring record held by his brothers, Casey and Ryan Powell. With four goals against Hobart, Powell moved into a tie for 14th on the school's all-time goals list with long-time friend and teammate Josh Coffman (118 career goals).

Other standout performances for the Orange included a hat trick by Lindsay and a season-high two goals by Park. Park has two goals, one assist and 10 groundballs in SU's last two victories. Junior goaltender Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) recorded 12 saves and moved into ninth place on the school's all-time saves list with 440 career stops. The Orangemen won 16 of 29 faceoffs against the Statesmen.

Syracuse will next be in action on Saturday, April 3, when it travels to Providence, R.I. to take on undefeated Brown (6-0), ranked No. 11 in this week's Geico/STX Coaches Poll. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
