Towson vs. Bucknell
February 27, 2010
The Game Story:
TOWSON, Md. - Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) tallied career highs with six goals, eight points and five ground balls and Bucknell outscored Towson 6-0 in the fourth quarter as the Bison men's lacrosse team defeated the Tigers 13-9 Saturday afternoon. Bucknell, which is ranked 15th nationally, trailed by as many as three goals in the first half as it posted its second consecutive come-from-behind victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Brandau, who now has a team-high 11 goals this season, scored five of his six goals in the second half, including three in a row in the fourth quarter that helped the Bison overcome a 9-7 deficit and take a 10-9 lead. Both of Brandau's assists also came in the second half as he had a hand in seven of Bucknell's 10 second-half goals.

The third of Brandau's three consecutive scores to start the fourth quarter proved to be the winning goal. It came with 5:26 on the clock off a pass from Chris Palmer (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School). The Bison then piled on three more tallies in the final two minutes with Brandau rounding out the scoring with five seconds remaining. Bucknell registered its six fourth-quarter goals on just nine shots.

Sam Finnell (Skillman, N.J./Deerfield Academy), who came off the bench in the second quarter, had an outstanding fourth quarter in goal for the Bison. He made six of his eight saves during the final period, and yielded just five goals in more than 36 minutes of playing time. He entered the game in favor of starter Kyle Feeney (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) with the Bison trailing 4-2 midway through the second quarter.

Mike Danylyshyn (three goals) (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Billy Eisenreich (two goals) (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) joined Brandau with multiple goals for the Bison, while Austin Winter (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) dished out a game-high three assists. Towson (0-1) had a balanced scoring attack as nine different players scored goals and only Tim Stratton post multiple assists with two.

Bucknell fell behind early as it trailed 5-2 in the waning minutes of the first half. Brandau tallied with 2:33 left and the Bison went into halftime facing a 5-3 deficit.

Towson extended its lead back to three with a goal just over three minutes into the second half, but then Danylyshyn tallied twice in less than two minutes and Eisenreich followed shortly after to even the score at 6-6. It took the Tigers just five seconds to go back on top, though, as Matt Thomas scored moments after winning the ensuing faceoff.

Neither team was able to convert in extra-man situations as Bucknell was 0-for-5 and Towson 0-for-1. The Bison had converted 4 of 5 extra-man chances in their first two games.

Both teams attempted 31 shots and the Bison claimed the ground ball battle 43-35, including 12-8 in the deciding fourth quarter. Bucknell won 12 of 26 faceoffs and committed 16 turnovers, while Towson had 14 faceoffs won and 18 turnovers.

Towson goalkeeper Rob Wheeler played the entire game and registered six saves.

The win was just the third in 18 all-time meetings against Towson for Bucknell, which has now captured four consecutive road games dating back to last year.

The Bison will be back in action next Saturday, March 6, at Navy. Game time is 3 p.m. Bucknell and the Mids met in last year's Patriot League Championship Game with Navy prevailing 9-8 thanks to an own goal in the closing minutes at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
