| Senior attackman Josh Gerber scored a career high six goals and freshman attackman Andy Gallagher added five goals and an
assist as UMBC defeated Mt. St. Mary's, 16-7, in the opener for both teams. The game was played at Johns Hopkins'
Homewood Field.
Trailing 2-1 four minutes into the game, the Retrievers scored seven unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead with 8:39 to play in the second quarter. Gerber scored three goals in that run and Gallagher added two. The Mount cut the deficit to 8-3 at halftime, but Gerber opened the third quarter with his fourth and fifth goals of the game to give UMBC a commanding 10-3 lead with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter. Senior midfielder Scott Steele added a goal and two assists for UMBC, while Travis Tomczak (1g, 1a) and Greg Wojtech (2a) had two points each. Starting netminder Tim Flanagan made 8 saves in 53 minutes of work. Phil Grillo, Pat Muston and Matt Gallagher added single goals for UMBC. |
