| Baltimore, MD - Trailing 6-4 late in the third period, the host UMBC
Retrievers scored five unanswered goals and held on to defeat the Penn
State Nittany Lions, 9-8, in an ECAC contest Saturday afternoon at UMBC
Stadium.
UMBC (2-3, 1-2 ECAC) trailed 6-4 after Penn State senior attacker Will Driscoll beat Retrievers^Ò keeper Tim Flanagan 11:49 into the third quarter. However, UMBC senior attackman Gavin Stringer scored a goal with thirty-six seconds remaining in the third quarter to bring the Retrievers within 6-5 entering the final quarter. The Retrievers then scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to grab a 9-6 advantage. Three of the goals came within a span of just fifty seconds midway through the quarter. Sophomore midfielder Franklin Berry scored off an assist from junior Josh Dodson at the 7:00 mark and junior Greg Wojtech scored just ten seconds later after the Retrievers won the face-off. Sophomore midfielder Pat Muston scored his third goal of the day at the 7:50 mark to give UMBC an 8-6 advantage. The Retrievers scored an important insurance goal at the 11:29 mark as junior midfielder Adam Shiley caught Penn State goalie Chris Garrity out of position after taking a feed from Muston. Penn State got late unassisted goals by Marc Young (14:26) and Driscoll (14:50) in the closing minute. Flanagan made 17 saves to earn the victory for the Retrievers while Garrity stopped 10 shots for Penn State. |
