BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Drew Philie tallied a game-high six points on four goals and two assists to lead the Vermont men's lacrosse team to a 9-4 victory over Colgate in the season opener for the Catamounts. UVM improves to 1-0 and has now won four of its last five home openers.
Vermont scored the opening three goals of the contest and the final three, as the Cats also received four points from junior Thomas Galvin.
“I was pretty happy for our first game,” said Vermont head coach Ryan Curtis. “I was expecting it to be a little sloppy at times and we saw that in the third quarter, but our guys battled back from that. The effort was there the whole game and that is all we ask of them. We told the team before the game, expect that you might make some mistakes but don't compound them by not forgetting about it and that they need to move on, and they did that.”
The Cats jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the first 6:37 of play. Philie earned the team's first goal of the season on a feed from Galvin just 1:22 in. Philie would set up the next goal with an assist on Geoff Worley's tally and then freshman Ahmad Zachary earned his first point as a Catamount with a goal.
After Colgate (0-2) made it 3-1, Philie and Galvin hooked up again with the reigning America East Rookie of the Year earning his second score of the contest with 2:44 left in the first quarter. The Raiders cut it to 4-3 after a pair of scores, including one on a man-up advantage, before Vermont responded with the final two tallies of the first half to take a 6-3 lead at the break. Philie picked up the hat trick with his third and Galvin scored with 3:33 to go before intermission.
In the third quarter only one goal was recorded, as Colgate's Brendon McCann scored 1:55 in. The score would stay 6-4 Vermont until 4:52 into the fourth when Galvin earned his second of the day on Luke Ryder's second assist of the afternoon. UVM closed out the game with sophomore Garrett Virtue picking up his first of the season and Philie earning an unassisted tally with 2:43 remaining.
Junior David Barton earned the win in the cage with eight saves on the day, as Vermont held a 30-21 shot advantage for the game. Andrew Mould led the Raiders with a pair of goals.
Vermont returns to action on Friday when it travels to face Air Force starting at 9:30 p.m. eastern time. Check www.UVMAthletics.com later tonight for video highlights of today's game.
