Vermont vs. Colgate
March 5, 2005
The Game Story:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -Vermont’s Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) scored with two seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Catamounts to a thrilling 9-8 win over Colgate Saturday in the 2005 men’s lacrosse season opener for Coach Steve Beville’s team.

Layton, who had three goals in the game, took his man one-on-one into zone and beat Colgate goalie Andrew Jarolimek with a hard shot. Jarolimek played a superb game for the 2-1 Raiders, stopping 12 shots.

“You can’t play a more even game than that,” Beville commented after the game, which was played at South Burlington High School. “It was like Hoosiers. We called a timeout with eight seconds left and do we draw up a misdirection play? No, we give it to our best player and let him get a shot.”

Layton answered the call and the Catamounts are 1-0 on the season, beating a very tough Colgate team that had won its first two games of 2005 coming into Saturday’s contest.

Vermont led, 3-2, after 15 minutes and the game was tied at 4-4 after two. After three quarters, it was 6-6, and the game had the feel of one that would go right down to the wire. Both goalies – Jarolimek for Colgate and Mike Gabel (Falmouth, Mass.) for Vermont – were outstanding, making the saves when challenged.

Colgate took a 7-6 lead midway through the fourth quarter on Rob Nelson’s goal, but Vermont answered with a goal by Austin Humphries (Salem, Va.), his second of the game. Colgate then took an 8-7 lead with 1:14 left in regulation on Brian Robinson’s second goal of the game, but Humphries was again the key guy for the Catamounts, nailing his third of the game with 42 seconds left to tie it at 8-8 and setting up Layton’s heroics.

Gabel finished with 16 saves for Vermont. Layton had three goals and an assist on the afternoon, while Humphries added three goals and Chris Legare (Derry, N.H.), Jamie Kirk (Orangeville, Ont.) and Myles Jewell (Sudbury, Mass.) also scored for the Catamounts.

For Colgate, Matt Lalli, Brendan Hurley and Robinson each had two goals, while Rob Ryan and Nelson also connected.

Vermont plays Canisius at Liverpool High School in Liverpool, N.Y. on Tuesday at 2:30pm before returning home to host Providence next Saturday at 2:00pm at South Burlington High School.
