Vermont vs. Fairfield

The Game Story:
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont freshman Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md.) scored three goals, including the game winner with 1:52 remaining, to lead the Catamounts to a come-from-behind 9-8 win over Fairfield at Moulton Winder Field on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Shay Cunningham (Southborough, Mass.) added a hat trick as the Catamounts overcame a five-goal first half deficit to improve to 3-7 (1-0 AE) on the season. Fairfield dropped to 3-5 with the loss.

Junior Brandon Goodwyn (Bethesda, Md.) recorded three assists for the Catamounts, who have won three of their last four games. Senior goalie Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J.) made 11 saves and picked up a team-high eight ground balls.

Sophomore Dan Holub and freshman Ryan Mulford both had a pair of goals in the loss for the Stags.

Fairfield led 6-1 early in the second quarter but Vermont rattled off three unanswered goals before halftime to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Cunningham started the rally with his second goal of the game with 5:32 left in the second.

Then junior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y.) notched a man-up goal on a feed from Lichtfuss at the 4:50 mark. Senior Trevor Wagar (Guelph, Ontario) followed up with a goal at 2:53 to make it a two-goal game at intermission.

Licthfuss opened up the scoring in the second half with a terrific bounce shot from the top of the box at 10:03 of the third quarter. Goodwyn assisted on the goal that pulled Vermont within 6-5.

After Mulford scored for the Stags, the Catamounts recorded back-to-back goals to close out the third to tie the game 7-7.

Goodwyn setup Lichtfuss for a man-up goal at 3:19. Then senior Collin Shore (Ithaca, N.Y.) scooped up a ground ball and fed senior Andrew Holden (Glastonbury, Conn.) in transition for his first goal of the season with just four seconds remaining in the quarter.

Vermont and Fairfield exchanged goals early in the fourth to make the score 8-8. With less than two minutes left, Goodwyn found Lichtfuss for the game winner.

Vermont’s defense held Fairfield to just two goals in the final 42 minutes and 18 seconds of the game. The Catamounts defensive core of Collin Shore, Aaron Shore (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Michael Watson (Albany, N.Y.) combined for seven ground balls.

Freshman Liam Teer went 12-for-21 on face offs and grabbed seven ground balls.

Vermont returns to America East action on Saturday at Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium at 4pm.
