| BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont men's lacrosse team got 11 saves from senior Mike Gabel (Falmouth, Mass.) and two goals each from senior Chris Legare (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) in an 11-7 win over Hartford in America East action at Centennial Field Saturday. The win, Vermont's second straight, was the first win in league play for the Catamounts, now 1-4 in America East action. Coach Steve Beville's team, 4-7 overall, needed to win and also needed Quinnipiac to defeat Binghamton today for the Catamounts to have any shot at a playoff berth. Binghamton defeated Quinnipiac, 6-3, clinching the fourth and final America East playoff spot. The Catamounts jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on goals by Layton, Brian Connelly (Wilton, Conn.), Andrew Holden (Glastonbury, Conn.) and senior captain Myles Jewell (Sudbury, Mass.), but Hartford responded with goals by Josh Wasson and Brian Tilley to make it 4-2 after one quarter. The teams traded goals in the early part of the second quarter before Vermont senior Colin Thompson (Shelburne, Vt.) and Gordon Holden (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored late to give the Catamounts an 8-4 lead at the half. The Catamounts then outscored Hartford, 2-10 and 0-6, two goals to none in the third quarter and despite three goals by the Hawks in the final 15 minutes, had enough to hang on for the victory. Freshman Jamie Kirk (Orangeville, Ont.), Vermont's leading scorer with 23 points this season, had a goal and three assists for the Cats, while Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) also scored for Vermont. Austin Humphries (Salem, Va.) chipped in two assists. For Hartford, Wasson had four goals and an assist while Tilley scored twice and Matt Holman also scored. In goal, Gabel was sharp, finishing with 11 saves in his final appearance at Centennial Field. For Hartford, Alex Finkelman started and gave up eight goals while posting six saves in the first half. Franklin Pargh relieved him in the second half and had five saves while allowing three goals. The game marked the final home game for six Vermont seniors: Gabel, Jewell, Legare, Thompson, Bill Masiulis (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Jesse Shaw (Stonington, Conn.). The six Catamounts were honored with a brief pre-game ceremony that included their parents. The Catamounts finish out the 2005 season next Saturday at Quinnipiac. Game time is 1:00pm. |
