Vermont vs. Hartford

The Game Story:
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont exploded for a season high 20 goals and junior Shay Cunningham (Southborough, Mass.) led the way with one goal and six assists as the Catamounts defeated Hartford 20-12 at Moulton Winder Field on Saturday afternoon on senior day. Vermont improved to 4-10 (1-4 America East) with the victory in the season finale and Hartford fell to 2-12 (1-4 America East) with the loss.

Senior Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) notched a team-high four goals for the Catamounts and senior Dan Zwirko (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Andrew Pierson (Havre de Grace, Md.) both added a hat trick.

Sophomore Luke LaBranche (Cold Springs Harbor, N.Y.) went 21-for-31 on face offs and picked up a team-high nine ground balls. Senior goalie Darryl Swarts (Ann Arbor, Mich.) made 15 saves in the victory. He finished the year with 194 saves to move into 10th place on UVM’s all-time single-season saves list.

Hartford took a 6-2 lead in the first quarter behind three goals by senior Jason Whitehouse.

Vermont responded with an 8-2 run before halftime to take a 10-8 lead at intermission. Zwirko had two terrific goals in the stretch. The first came on a wrap around shot at 11:18 of the quarter and the second came at 9:52 off a great spin move. Zwirko finished the year with a team-high 28 points on 19 goals and nine assists.

Junior Andrew Holden (Glastonbury, Conn.) capped off the run with a diving score in front with just nine seconds remaining until halftime. Holden also had five ground balls on the afternoon.

The Catamounts opened up a 17-10 lead in the third quarter after outscoring the Hawks 7-2 in the period. Six different Catamounts scored a goal in the third, including LaBranche who scored right off the face off with 53 seconds left in the quarter.

The fourth quarter was highlighted by the first goal of senior defenseman John Leonard’s (Woolwich, Maine) career. Leonard scored in transition with 5:45 remaining to finish off the Vermont scoring and give the Catamounts a 20-12 victory.

The win ended an eight game losing streak for Vermont and gave the Catamounts a fourth straight win over the Hawks.

GAME NOTES: Senior Pete Hein had two scores to finish the year with a team best 23 goals … Senior Adam Kornuth and junior Trevor Wagar both had one goal and one assist … Junior Alex Young and sophomore Brandon Goodwyn each had one goal … Junior defenseman Aaron Shore had four ground balls and senior defensemen Clyde McGraw and Jared Overlee added three apiece.
