BURLINGTON, Vt. – Connor McNamara scored with 10 second remaining in regulation to lift the Vermont Catamounts to a come-from-behind victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 12-11, in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Virtue Field on Saturday.

Sacred Heart held a 5-2 lead after an unassisted tally by Andrew Newbold at the 4:37 mark of the first quarter, but UVM rallied scoring six straight goals from the 2:21 mark of the first quarter to the 12:09 mark of the third period to take an 8-5 lead.

The Catamounts shutout Sacred Heart in the second stanza behind goals from Drew Philie, McNamara and Garrett Virtue, to take its first lead of the game, 6-5 at the end of two periods of action.

Vermont added two more goals, one each from A.J. Masson and Dan Gutberlet, to open the third period and pushed its lead to three, 8-5. Tom Sardelli scored for SHU at the 8:45 mark of the third quarter, to slice the lead to, 8-6, but UVM answered with three consecutive goals by three different Catamounts to push the lead back to five, 11-6, at the end of the third period.

In the final frame, the Pioneers rallied back scoring five straight, off five different sticks, to tie the game up, 11-11, with 5:10 remaining in the game.

With time winding down, UVM's Derek Braig caused a turnover in Sacred Heart's attacking end to get the ball back for the Catamounts. UVM worked the clock down to the final 30 seconds before calling a timeout. Out of the timeout, Masson held onto the ball battling through a scrum in the far corner of the field and was able to find McNamara who turned and fired the game-winning goal past Ryan Hughes to lift UVM to its first victory of the year.

McNamara finished the day with a hat trick and the Catamounts had eight different players register a goal. David Barton collected 15 saves in the Vermont net.

Sardelli led Sacred Heart with a hat trick and Hughes finished the day with 10 stops in the Pioneer goal.

Vermont moves to 1-6 overall, while Sacred Heart falls to 2-4 on the season. The Catamounts will be back in action on March 24 when they host Brown at 1 p.m. at Virtue Field.
