| MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Freshman Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored two
goals and added two assists to pace a balanced offensive attack as the
University of Vermont men's lacrosse team defeated Siena, 16-7, Tuesday at
Kohn Field.
The Catamounts, 2-4 overall, ran out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter
anmd led 10-3 at the half. Siena, 1-4, scored four straight goals in the
final 16 minutes to make a run, but Vermont finished off the game with a
pair of fourth-quarter goals from Myles Jewell (Englewood, Colo.) and
Lowell Thompson (Shelburne, Vt.) to make for the final margin.
Six players had two goals each for the Cats: Thompson, Jewell, Maher, Doug
Moses (Marietta, N.Y.), Bill Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) and RJ Harrison
(Columbus, Ohio). Matt Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Chris Legare (Derry,
N.H.), Phil McKnight (Baltimore, Md.) and Pat Shea (Shelburne, Vt.) also
scored for Vermont. Siena was led by Daniel Wolpert, who scored three goals.
"It was good to see some much-needed offensive production today," Vermont
coach Steve Beville said. "We need to get better offensively before we
start league play on April 6 (at Quinnipiac), and we have one more game at
Providence to continue to improve. Michael Gabel(Falmouth, Mass.) was
terrific in goal for us today. Siena got in on us a few times and he
snuffed them early. He has been very consistent all year."
Gabel finished with 15 saves in 45 minutes, giving up just four goals,
while Matt Geary (Marshfield, Mass.) had three saves in 15 minutes. For
Siena, John Bamford had 17 saves.
