Vermont vs. Binghamton
April 8, 2006
The Game Story:
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Despite a solid defensive effort, that included a combined 10 ground balls from sophomore twins Aaron and Collin Shore (Glastonbury, Conn.) along with 13 saves from junior goalie Daryl Swarts (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Vermont fell to Binghamton 9-5 at Moulton Winder Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Catamounts to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in America East while the Bearcats improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

“The defense was solid but when you commit nine penalties you are asking for trouble,” head coach Steve Beville said. “Binghamton hurt us with time of possession and smart play. We needed our upperclassmen to come up big today and unfortunately that didn’t happen. Now we need to put this one behind us and get right back at it on Monday against Providence.”

Senior Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored three goals to increase his season total to a team leading 28 scores. Senior Austin Humphries (Salem, Va.) and junior Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) each scored one goal and had one assist for the Catamounts.

Freshman Chris Mulheron led the offensive attack for Binghamton with four goals and two assists for six points.

The Catamounts had a 3-1 advantage in the first quarter but the Bearcats scored eight of the next nine goals to take control of the game. Binghamton took advantage of Vermont’s nine penalties by scoring three times on the man advantage. The Catamounts went 0-for-2 on the power play. Binghamton also outshot Vermont 38-22 including 15-1 in the second period.

The Catamounts return to action on Monday, April 10 at 3:30pm at Moulton Winder Field against Providence. The game was rescheduled after getting postponed earlier this season because of the weather. Admission to all men’s lacrosse home games during the 2006 season is free of charge.
